Budgeting

Statistic calculating

"Getting your finances in order is never easy, add in some neurodiversity and it can be an even tougher assignment especially when you're looking to save or buy a first property."

I’ve recently completed a budget review for a person who is looking to get a better handle on their finances and to eventually be able to move out and buy their first house. We’ve run through their current savings along with all outgoings and incomings and looked at where savings can be made, this has then been entered into a spreadsheet. I’ve also compiled a list of expenses that a first time buyer will need to be aware of when purchasing a their first house.

I'm not a gardener but....

Taming the Jungle

Garden – Clearance & Retreat

This is a personal project that stands out as something completely different from anything I’ve done before. It showcases a new range of skills and pushes me out of my comfort zone, which is exciting.

Taming the Jungle: Garden Clearance & Retreat

The garden is massively overgrown and has been left unattended for a long time. This year, I’ve started cutting back the greenery to gain access to all areas. It’s a long-term project, but progress is slowly being made. I’ll continue working on it through autumn and winter 2024, aiming to have it in much better shape by summer 2025.

As part of this project, I’ve decided to build a small retreat in one corner of the garden. This will be a place where I can relax when I need a break. I plan to make it weatherproof and tall enough to stand in, with lockable doors. It will include a chair and sofa where I can just have some me time, and I’ll install electricity to ensure it’s warm and insulated. There’s a lot to learn and do, and I’ll share progress updates periodically. My goal is to source materials cheaply or for free to keep costs down.

The first step is to prepare the ground, which involves clearing and leveling it. Then, I’ll add the corner and middle supports, strengthen the sides with struts, and work on weed-proofing the floor before laying raised flooring. Next, I’ll add the sides and a roofing structure, waterproof and paint the exterior, and work on making the interior watertight and insulated. Once the shell is complete, I can focus on the interior. If I can finish this by spring/summer 2025, I’ll be on track.

Additionally, I’ll continue clearing and tidying the garden, repairing the greenhouse, and finding a small, inexpensive shed for storage.
